Wednesday 2-2 Palace

Wednesday dropped two points in the battle against the drop as Matt Lawrence headed a late, late leveller in the snow for Neil Warnock's Crystal Palace in a four-goal clash at Hillsborough.

Goals from Ben Sahar and Wade Small looked to have secured the Owls a vital, and much deserved three points against Warnock's charges, but for the second home game this month a late strike dented Wednesday when they should have held on for all three points.

With Marcus Tudgay picking up an injury in training, Owls boss Brian Laws gave Chelsea loanee Ben Sahar his first start in a blue and white shirt since making the switch to S6, while Steve Watson's return to the squad following injury was the only other change to the side that drew at Coventry last week.

Both sides had pressure on for totally different reasons, but the game started in comical fashion as Sahar's tackle on a Palace defender saw the linesman knocked to the floor to the delight of those sat in the Kop.

The blustery conditions weren't helping either side, and with the conditions getting worse throughout the match, both sides knew that had to take their chances when they came.

Both sides hit the woodwork in the opening exchanges, Clinton Morrison almost breaking the bar with his powerful effort which had Grant well beaten, while Owls youngster Sean McAllister also saw his long-range effort come off the bar and out for a goal-kick in an even opening.

With the conditions as they were neither side played any flowing football, but it was the best move of the match to date whichsaw Wednesday opening the scoring in fine style as Sahar bagged his first goal for the club.

A neat one-twobetween the Chelsea man and Burton saw Sahar superbly take the ball in to his stride before producing a cool finish under the Palace stopper and racing away to the Wednesday fans behind the goal after just 18 minutes.

Palace had shown little in front of goal apart from Morrison's strike, but they almost levelled minutes later had it not been for the superb save from the in-form Grant.

The Owls number one picked up the man-of-the-match gong for his performance against Coventry last week and he needed to be at the top of his game to make a superb save from Hill to deflect his header for a corner.

The Owls looked to have done more than enough to take the lead in to half-time but Ben Watson produced a superb free-kick from the edge of the box to give Grant no chance and level the scores on 40 minutes.

Half-Time: Wednesday 1-1 Palace

Palace were expected to come out in the second half all-guns-blazing after their 40th minute leveller but it was Wednesday who came flying out of the traps and were unlucky not to regain their lead in a superb spell of pressure which lasted a good 20 minutes with Palace offering little in response.

Portsmouth loanee Frank Songo'o had looked dangerous in the first half and it was almost his quick thinking that got Wednesday back in front when he let loose a superb long-range strike which almost caught the Palace stopper by surprise but he managed to palm away the effort.

And Wade Small then had arguably the chance of the match when some good work from Kavanagh put the former MK Dons man in, but instead of taking a touch he hit a first time effort which went across the face of goal.

The game seemed to fizzle out after the hour mark with chances drying up, but Wednesday took a deserved lead on 68 minutes when Small was sent free down the left and he did superbly well to go by his marker and somehow put the ball in the back of the net from an acute angle.

Small raced away to the South Stand in celebration but promptly got a booking for taking his shirt off.

Wednesday should have made the game all-but safe through Sahar, as he first tried to riggle his way through the Palace defence before launching a powerful effort over the bar, and then some fine work from Hinds down the right pulled the ball back to the Israel international but he scuffed his short and it went harmlessly wide to the frustration of Owls boss Brian Laws.

The heavens opened in the latter stages with the snow pouring down at S6, making any kind of fine football near-on impossible.

And it was certainly pouring on the Wednesday faithful come the final whistle as Wednesday failed to hold on to their lead, Palace earning a succession of corners which eventually saw Lawrence force the ball home from close range to give the visitors a share of the spoils in the 93rd minute.

Go to've got Coventry going down, not Wednesday. Being fair, let's say plymouth, stoke, pigs beat us. We beat Coventry and Norwich at home and get draws at Blackpool, Scunnie and Leicester. We still survive by 4 points. Try and predict it based on form and be fair. OH YEAH AND PIGS MISS OUT OF PLAY OFFS BY 1 POINT EVEN IF THEY WIN 6 AND DRAW 1.

If we're your poor relations then why do you spend all your time trying to wind us up? It would be akin to us trolling Rotheram Utd's message boards. Inferiority complex methinks? We've both achieved little but your two failed premier league attempts don't compare to Wednesday's top division run throughout the 80's and 90's and our league cup victory. End of discussion.

Had chances to seal the game. I've now seen Palace do this to us twice this season. There did seem to be a lot of injury time when the game had only stopped for substitutions. I agree that Kavanagh is not looking impressive. Every corner or free kick is hitting the first man. I don't mind how he links up in the middle of the park but we need someone to take the set pieces. Songo'o was awful. He kept wanting to beat everyone instead of putting it into the box when he had a chance. Definitely should have made substitutions earlier. Bob on for Songo, Bolder on for Kava, Showunmi up front to hold the ball up. Oh well, no point crying over it now. Our form is still ten times better than Barnsley. On Radio Sheffield, most of the Barnsley fans were already sure they're going down. If we don't lose to Stoke then we'll stuff Coventry and up the table we go.

kavanagh was atrocious today his passing is awfull, please send him back, why have bolder and kavanagh on loan? keep bolder play either him or obrien alongside mcallister (who was superb) songo'o and small either side. gotta say disgruntled why on earth would u want showumni on the field as he is garbage, burton holds the ball up far better and he can actualy pass/tackle/shoot/head. Grant: 7 a fantastic save early on. Hinds: 6 was a bit slow when up against morrison. Beevers: 6 made a couple of errors but also made a couple of first rate tackles. Wood: 6. Spurr: 5 poor game today, passing was off and never looked in control.. Songo'o: 7 looked dangerous but always took 1 to many touches, him and simek linking would be very interesting. Kavangh: 4 the week link, passers where always behind the man, freekicks s**t poor header to miss a sitter Mcallister: 8 Man of match, never gave up, snapping at the oppositions heels all game, made sum good interceptions and a corking shot that rattled the crossbar. Small: 6 in and out of the game. Sahar: 7 with better players he could of had 3 today his runs where never properly picked up on, excellent finish. Burton: 6 held the ball up well not much else. Laws: 4 why keep to attacking wingers and tw0 strickers on the feild for the last ten minutes when we were being pushed deeper and deeper? idiot!

thought palace gave us a good game for first 45mins, but second half we were in control, should have had the gamesewn up 4,5, maybe even 6-1, kav with a shocking miss, sahar with a lazy swing after a good run by hinds, small miss hitting when clean through (kavs ball his only decent contribution) burton with a great effort from a corner, and a superb drive from songoo that just had the keeper all over the place, grant was a spectator and we end up with a draw, if they are playoff candidates then i give in!!

Showunmi is pretty bad, but no player has ever been so naturally untalented as Kim Olsen! Showunmi couldn't finish a chance if he was 3 yards out with an open net, but when he was playing okay and got the ball to feet, he would run quite well and moved into space. I think a big ugly distraction up front would have been useful and his height could well have been handy at that final corner. I think Small is starting to get a bit of form going and looking sharp (Except for that shot he missed). Would say he created much more than Songo'o.
