Wednesday 0 - Wolves 1

Hillsborough, Sheffield

07/03/09 - 3pm

Attendance: 23,703

Wednesday 0-1 Wolves

Wednesday's recent poor home form continued with their second defeat in a week as table-topping Wolves left Hillsborough with all three points in a dull encounter.

Sylvan Ebanks-Blake scored the winner as early as the fifth minute and Mick McCarthy's men closed out the game in a professional manner as the Owls struggled in front of goal.

Owls boss Brian Laws made two changes to the side that lost to Reading in midweek with James O'Connor replacing Darren Potter, who was unable to play due to his loan rules from Wolves, while Richard Hinds was preferred at the back to Mark Beevers.

Akpo Sodje was also included on the Owls bench, along with Frank Simek and Francis Jeffers.

But Wednesday made the worst possible start, when on five minutes Michael Kightly raced down the wing and floated a deep cross which found former Plymouth man Ebanks-Blake unmarked at the back post to head the visitors ahead after just five minutes.

Wednesday struggled in the first half, but some controversial decisions by the officials throughout the match didn't help the Owls' cause.

Wolves, looking to gain promotion automatically this term, didn't sit back on their early breakthrough though and could well have found themselves further ahead had Kightly done better from close range, while George Friend saw his looping header go just over the bar.

But while Wolves were enjoying the early chances, Wednesday always looked capable of creating something at the other end.

Former Wolves man Leon Clarke was getting some banter from the visiting fans, but the in-form frontman was doing well in the battle with the physical Wolves defence, while another former Wolves man in Michael Gray also looked to have something a bit extra about him against his former club.

Jermaine Johnson hardly had a sniff of the ball in the opening 30 minutes, but in the Jamaican, Wednesday can carve a chance out of nothing, and they did just that with their best chance of the game.

A superb ball put the jet-heeled Jamaican through on goal, twisting his way by two visiting defenders and bearing down on goal before firing his shot high and wide to the delight of the visiting fans behind the goal.

Johnson knew he should have done better with the golden opportunity, and he tried to rectify his error minutes later when firing at goal from the edge of the box, only to see his effort drift wide.

The efforts gave Wednesday, and the majority of the crowd, the lift they needed going into half-time, and although Wolves had bossed long spells, Wednesday were certainly not out of the game at the break.

Half-Time: Wednesday 0-1 Wolves

The hosts were forced into a change at half-time, with Clarke going off through an injury to be replaced by Francis Jeffers.

But the changes did little to stop the flow of the game continuing to go in Wolves' favour, although chances remained at a premium with the visitors continuing with their 'professional' approach to the game.

The first 20 minutes of the second half were to forget from the hosts, with Wolves winning the midfield battle and thwarting any kind of threat on Wayne Hennessey's goal.

Changes needed to be made and Laws introduced Sodje for Michael Gray with just under half an hour to go, a timely boost to the pretty flat atmosphere inside S6.

But although the long-term injury-absentee got into the thick of the action and posed more of an aerial threat to the Wolves backline, he failed to find the magic to get Wednesday back on level terms.

Hennessey was a spectator for much of the second period, the only save of note being from a Johnson effort which went straight into the Wolves stopper's arms.

A last throw of the dice saw Luke Boden introduced for James O'Connor, but it was too little too late for the Owls, and it was Wolves who could well have extended their lead and make the last few exchanges slightly more comfortable.

Spurr, one of the plus performances from the match, got back well to divert an effort off the line after Grant had come out to try and clear the danger, as the game drew to a close in disappointing fashion.

Full-Time: Wednesday 0-1 Wolves

Wednesday: Grant, Buxton, Hinds, Wood, Spurr, Johnson, O'Connor (Boden 87), McAllister, Gray (Sodje 69), Clarke (Jeffers 46), Tudgay. Unused subs: Beevers, Simek.

gray-please dont offer him a contract for next season, o'connor was rubbish and johnson is a disgrace!!!! for missing that chance in the first half he want to donate his wages to the childrens hospital-i could see that that was the only chance we were gunna have in the match and it was!!!! tudgay underperformed for me. sodje bit of a anti-climax but then again he might not have had enough time to get going!!! this squad needs major investment there is so much basic things wrong with how we play-like why do the strikers come back, we need to leave 1 striker on the last man-offsides etc...COME ON THESE ARE BASICS!!!!!

Have to agree with supersibon. O'Connor & Gray were poor today. Spurr was probably our best player which says a lot. Having said that, I didn't think Wolves were up to much either considering they are top of the league. Yes the squad needs some investment, especially in midfield but I am convinced we will get there. Keep the faith - we really aren't that bad compared to some sides I have seen this season.

The most god awful display of refereeing I have seen recently! No excuse for the performance but it didnt help, we were given nothing!! I dont think its just the prem that refs are scared of the top teams after looking at who are last two opponents were..... JJ needs to go though! When he isnt being truly awful all he does is run in a straight line anyway and he doesnt do that very well either!!

Lets face it people, we are Sheffield Wednesday!! We should not be losing to ANY team in this league or at least half of the Premiership!! What has gone so terribly wrong? Yes it's great when we win but for me, everytime we lose, it's a disgrace! Sheffield Wednesday should be a Premiership top 10 team at the very least and it seems to me we are a million miles from that!

Another home defeat, even though it was against the top club, doesn't help your play-off chances.

I'm afraid to say I agree with BFL here. Westy what are you on about, we are punching above our weight as it is, if we are being honest. At the minute we are a mid-table team at best.

Sorry but I agree with Westy about our club, about our team it's a different matter. We just lost two in a row to teams very likely to be promoted so let's not throw our toys out of the pram. In both games we only conceded 3 goals whilst scoring one. What we lack, and have lacked from the off, is a goalscorer. A player who will knock in 20 plus a season. BFL will no doubt be missing Beattie's influence and that's what makes the difference between contenders and also rans. I don't want a hard running, hard working forward, I'd be happy with a lazy ******** who would just put the effing ball in the net on a regular basis. Akpo and Jeffers are stillinjury prone but should be given a chance when fit, Tudgay is having his best season but is still some way off 20 plus goals, Clarke is better than he was. None of them are at the moment a Beattie or an Earnshaw (look what happens at Forest when you tell him to stop working and start scoring!). I know Bfl will crow at my admiration of Beattie but he's at Stoke know and how much are you going to miss him? If we want to make the playoffs we'd have to win every one of our last nine games, so it's not very likely but next season look at what we've got and what we need. Goals are what we're lacking (unless we can play Burnley every week).

totally right regards to beattie, we dropped a right clanger yet again. utter discrace and yes i feel it will make the difference in us going up or not....but watch this space eh!! regards to your views on wendy being a 'big premiership easy top 10 club' is absolutely mental. things chance and your club has changed. even back in the early 90's when you spent millions upon millions upon millions were you never considered in the same mold as wesy described yourselves. time to wake up and smell the sour grapes i think. amusing as beattie was labeled a good pen taker when he was at the lane, now people talk about how we have sold the best striker outside the prem for peanuts.

I thought wolves were just as crap as us. The stats prove they created little goal scoring chance, just so happened they took one of their chances. Wednesday never looked like scoring except when johnson missed that sitter cant understand why he played 90 mins.
