LOAN star Darren Potter stirred up some magic to produce a late leveler for the Owls' penultimate match of the season against Bristol City at Ashton Gate.
In a typical end-of-season affair with nothing but pride to play for for both sides, Potter, on loan from Wolves until the end of the season, curled in a superb free-kick to the delight of the fancy dress clad Wednesdayite's in Bristol.
Lee Johnson had given the hosts a first-half lead before Potter rescued a share of the spoils to keep Wednesday in the top half of the table.
Boss Brian Laws made just one change to the side that beat Southampton 2-0 last weekend with Leon Clarke returning to the starting eleven after Luke Varney's loan stint at S6 came to an end.
Wednesday started the game brightly beat clear-cut chances were few and far between for both sides in a dull opening 45 minutes which the hosts just about edged.
Clarke and Francis Jeffers were back together in attack and the pair linked well for the Owls best offering early on, Jeffers drilling a low effort straight at Bristol stopper Adriano Basso when he should have done better.
At the other end, Marvin Elliott came close from long-range for the hosts but Lee Grant had his effort well covered.
But although Wednesday were looking the brighter in the early stages of the first half, it was City who took the advantage through Johnson, son of Bristol boss Gary.
The hosts broke quickly up the pitch and former Crewe frontman Nicky Maynard put in Johnson who made no mistake with a clinical finish.
Both sides had half chances to score next, Clarke twice being denied by last-ditch tackles, while Marcus Tudgay had the time and space to have a long-range effort on goal but his strike went just over Basso's bar.
Bristol had the better opportunities though and Ivan Sproule should have done better from a goalmouth scramble but Grant got down well to deny the hosts a second minutes before half-time.
Half-Time: Bristol 1-0 Wednesday
Wednesday had nothing to lose in the second half and they came out with more edge to their game, forcing the hosts onto the back foot on the resumption.
Clarke turned well and fired a shot which Basso dealt with, before Sean McAllister saw a drive deflected wide.
Wednesday showed a marked improvement in the second half and looked the better side, but as the chances continued to come it seemed likely that City were going to end their home campaign with three points.
Further chances fell to Potter and Clarke, but the Bristol defence was holding firm.
Gary Johnson brought on Dele Adebola and Lee Trundle to add further attacking options with a view of putting the game to bed, but the changes had little effect.
And while Johnson was the man who bagged the goal for the hosts, he turned hero to villian when he brought Clarke down just outside the box with two minutes to go.
Potter stepped up and curled his effort superbly by Basso to bag the Owls a deserved share of the spoils in dramatic style.
Full Time: Wednesday 1-1 Bristol
