Report: Burnley 0-1 Wednesday
26/8/14 - 7.45pm
Wednesday knocked out Premier League opposition to progress to the third round of the Capital One Cup on Tuesday night.
The Owls saw off Burnley 1-0 at Turf Moor thanks to a late Atdhe Nuhiu penalty to book their place in the next round and maintain their impressive unbeaten start to the season in all competitions.
Wednesday have now won all three of their away matches and the success comes hot-on-the-heels of an impressive league win at Middlesbrough on Saturday that left Stuart Gray's men in the top-six.
Burnley, recently promoted to the top fight, provided the toughest test of all, despite resting first-team players, but the Owls came through with flying colours despite resting regular starters of their own.
Chris Kirkland started in goal, while there were also starts for Gary Madine and Jeremy Helan. Glenn Loovents, Nuhiu and Stevie May were amongst those who started on the bench.
The success will have meant a little extra for Gray, who was a former first team coach and caretaker boss of the Clarets. The Owls boss said he would make the trip across the Pennines to win and he did just that.
Ashley Barnes and Marvin Sordell had good chances for the hosts but the visitors were far from second best and grabbed the decisive goal with 12 minutes left when Nuhiu tucked home his third goal from two games when Helan was felled inside the box and the referee pointed to the spot.
The hosts pushed hard to get on level terms late on but Wednesday clung on to book their place in the second round.
