Vital Match Report - #swfc hammer three past Charlton
3pm Saturday March 19th, 2016
The Owls came out 3-0 winners against the Addicks with strikes from Tom Lees, Fernando Forestieri and an El-Hadji Ba own goal as the hapless defender deflected Alex Lopez`s shot past his own keeper.
Wednesday stay sixth in the Championship, with the Addicks six points from safety at the other end as the Championship heads into an enforced break thanks to the international friendlies.
After losing to neighbours Rotherham in their last home game, the Owls were determined to avoid another slip-up and piled on the pressure from the start but in truth it was a fairly dull opening half with the best chance by way of a looping Forestieri header.
Visiting keeper Nick Pope was the busier of the two in the first half, but Charlton put up a resolute defensive effort after that to keep the first half scoreless.
With the Owls failing to open the scoring, Carvalhal changed the team about at the interval introducing Nuhiu and Lopez to mix the game and Wednesday's attack more bite and threat. Forestieri drew another good save from Pope, before Nuhiu and Jack Hunt went close to the opener.
But once the Addicks resistance was finally broken by Lees' header from a corner, Charlton crumbled, with Forestieri soon adding a second after Nuhiu headed against the post. Forestieri anticipated the rebound and it was nicely in the net before Pope in the Charlton goal knew anything about it.
The third goal, was unlucky deflection and just rubbed salt into the wounds for the Addicks, who had prevouisly lifted their spirits with a welcome home win over Middlesbrough in their game before the visit to Hillsborough. The goal was awarded to Ba although Lopez hit a fine strike from the edge of the box thinking he'd bagged his first goal.in the famous Blue and White stripes in front of a full Kop.
Changed the way the game was played when he arrived after half time. Caused nothing but problems and issues for a leaky Addicks backline and a vital focal point for the Owls going forward. Was unlucky not to score but maybe he'll claim he wanted to set up Forestieri anyway.
