Wednesday Defeated In Playoff Final

0 - 1
Hull City

5pm Saturday May 28th, 2016

Attendance: 70,189

As the dust has settled and a few days have passed since a disappointing afternoon in playing terms at least for Sheffield Wednesday, another season of Championship football beckons. A fantastic strike from Mohamed Diame was enough for Hull City to secure victory over a spirited Owls side that created few chances to seize the game at Wembley.

In fairness, aside from the opening 25 minutes Steve Bruce's side dominated what was ultimately a poor game and always looked like being decided by a solitary goal. The Owls struggled to impose themselves as their 16-year exile from the top flight was prolonged.

With promotion to the Premier League estimated to be worth at least £170 to £200 million and backed by a noisy, almost party like atmosphere from 40,000 plus Wednesdayites it's it's a shame the Wednesday side didn't impose themselves on Hull as they had done against Cardiff and Brighton in the weeks before.

But, after Wednesday had twice tested goalkeeper Eldin Jakupovic from free-kicks, the Tigers rallied to take control of the first half and Huddlestone tested Westwood before Diame's shot off the post and an Abel Hernandez header, which was cleared off the line by Kieran Lee. Moses Odubajo was denied by Westwood's quick-thinking dash off his line.

Forestieri raced away from a Westwood clearance but was unable to get his strike away before being challenged. Then Hull captain Micheal Dawson also saw a half-volley blocked by Westwood after the break but it was Diame who secured victory with a sublime winner with 18 minutes remaining.

After Diame`s goal the Owls fans tried to roar on their side but an equaliser rarely seemed likely and as the game ebbed away Jeremy Helan skyed the Owls best opening leaving the very vocal and vibrant contingent of fans in blue and white, who easily outnumbered those in attendance from Hull disappointed but not down hearted.

Star Player

Without doubt the fans were the best and proved just why only Tigers and Blades fans wanted that result on Saturday.
