Wednesday Back To Winning Ways Over Wigan
3pm Saturday September 11th, 2016
Wednesday returned to winning ways at Hillsborough, despite falling behind to Wigan early on who now have suffered their third defeat in a row.
In truth to contest felt one-sided in the Owls favour, but football sometimes doesn't reflect that and the important thing is that the Owls secured all three-points. Wigan hit the front first to 'that` man Will Grigg with just four minutes on the clock, as he tapped in after Jacobs took advantage of a poor Tom Lees pass into midfield.
The Owls didn't dwell on that error and had the majority of the play without ever seeming to cause a threat in front of the Latics goal. Until the 29th minute when Steven Fletcher followed up his goalscoring exploits for Scotland with his first league goal for Wednesday in front of the Kop.
Bannan picked out Fletcher on the angle of the Wigan box and the Scottish striker struck across the advancing Wigan keeper to draw the Owls level. The Owls continued to dominate the game with the visitors restricted to long range efforts and one was tipped over by Westwood from Luke Burke.
The Owls could have taken the lead just before halftime as Bannan again turned playmaker and Ross Wallace just clipped wide. The second period followed the theme of the first with Wigan camped in their own half and Wednesday well on top in terms of possession and chances.
Target man Steven Fletcher almost added his and the Owls second with a looped header that hit the crossbar. Next up Kieran Lee fired narrowly over from distance as the pressure began to crank up on the Wigan back line. With goals needed Carlos added Gary Hooper into the home attack. But, it was Fernando Forestieri who clinched the three-points at S6 for the Owls. After neat build up play with Kieran Lee, Forestieri saw his first shot saved but pounced on the rebound to grab all three-points for the Owls.
The game continued in the same vein but clear cut chances, until Gary Hooper was denied an overhead finish by Adam Bogdan after a swift Owls build up in the latter stages.
As the final whistle sounded the Owls players and fans celebrated 'kick starting` their season.
