Vital Match Report - Owls Downed At Derby

Derby County
2 - 0
Wednesday

iPro Stadium

3pm Saturday October 29th, 2016

Attendance: 30,064

Referee:

Wednesday found themselves frustrated at a bizarre refereeing decision and they own inability to convert chances at the other end. As they left the iPro empty-handed as they went down 2-0, leaving them once again outside the playoff places.

Starting off it was Wednesday who looked the better and more ambitious side for long periods. But it was Jacob Butterfield's 20-yard shot that was tipped over by Cameron Dawson in the second minute that served as a warning to the Owls.

Before that Adam Reach jinked his way into the box in the sixth minute and when the ball was played across, Kieran Lee's shot was deflected behind for a corner. Derby failed to get the ball clear and after Scott Carson clawed out Fernando Forestieri's header, Barry Bannan chipped to the back post where Reach's shot appeared to strike the hand of Richard Keogh, it looked to all in the ground that the away side should have had a penalty and the guilty party 'handed` his marching orders, but neither happened as the referee bottled the decision.

Derby then managed to steady themselves and scored in the 17th minute. Full back Christie won the corner and met Tom Ince`s corner to head past Dawson from six yards.

The game failed to sparkle although the Owls did have the majority of the ball and were fortunate when Bent brazed over in the 43rd minute.

After halftime the Owls continued to dominate the ball and next to try his luck was Forestieri, who should have scored in the 56th minute after Hooper set him up. Nando smashed over from 12 yards, a few minutes later he hit a low drive that forced Carson into a fine save.

As often with football, against the run of play, Derby scored again when Butterfield's shot from just outside the box was deflected to Pearce who slid the ball in from eight yards and sealed the points for the home side moving them away from the bottom three in the process. The Owls continued to press and Forestieri forced Carson into another save at his near post. Dawson smartly saved a Butterfield effort, but the Owls need to ensure they take their chances or they may well fail to meet expectations this season.
