O'Donnell is a goalkeeper who has had to bide his time after joining the Wednesday first team squad from the academy in May 2007.

He went on to enjoy three fruitful loan spells with York City, Rotherham United and Oldham Athletic where he gained valuable first team experience. He enjoyed a further loan spell away from Hillsborough in 2010/11 - this time with Grimsby Town, proving popular with their supporters.

He made his debut live on TV for the Owls against Southampton in March 2011. Although Wednesday lost that game 2-0, the young keeper gave an excellent account of himself at St Mary's and made a number of eye-catching saves in front of the Sky cameras. He shone again at the start of the 2011/12 season with a good display against Blackpool in the Carling Cup, again on Sky.
